Hundreds of officials from around the world are set to gather in Hong Kong for the Apec Finance Ministers' Meeting, which opens on Tuesday in Wan Chai. This marks the first time the SAR is hosting the two-day meeting, which usually serves as the curtain raiser to the main summit, the Apec Economic Leaders' Meeting, to be held in Shenzhen in November. Financial Secretary Paul Chan said that whatever the visitors are here for, the government aims to leave them with a good impression of Hong Kong. Speaking on an RTHK programme, Chan pledged to use the opportunity to showcase the city's many advantages to the world. "The nation is showing great favour to Hong Kong by holding the Apec Finance Ministers' Meeting here. This allows political and business leaders from around the world to personally experience Hong Kong's situation, especially the unique advantages of the city under the 'one country, two systems' framework," he said. Beijing confirmed last week that Finance Minister Lan Foan will chair the meeting. Four major topics have been proposed – financial policies that support people's livelihoods, digital infrastructure financing, driving the development of financial inclusion in light of local conditions, and promoting exchanges and cooperation among young finance professionals. Chan said that apart from the excellent connectivity, Hong Kong has many strengths to become a global partner. "Our capital market is very vibrant. If companies want to develop business on the mainland, we encourage them to list and raise funds in Hong Kong," he explained. "These firms also need to adapt and understand local regulations when entering new markets. Hong Kong's professional services have a strong advantage in this area. "We can act as their consultants, even serve as their risk management managers, and work hand‑in‑hand to explore the mainland market." He added that it is important to leave a good impression on visitors, with authorities ready to show them around Hong Kong if they're able to stay after the meeting. Edited by Edmond Fong
